Picasa is a free tool that is available to download from Google. This will store all your photos on your computer and allows you to edit them by cropping, removing red eyes, colour tinting and changing the lightness or darkness of the photo. This facility is a fantastic way of introducing you to image editing as it covers all the basic needs and of course it is free and extremely easy to use.

Adobe Photoshop Elements is the next step in image editing and manipulation. You can pretty much do anything you want with a photo with this software, including cropping, resizing, adding filters, blurring, turn photos into sketches or oil painting replicas, merging different photos together. The possibilites are endless. You can be as subtle or as crazy as you like with your photos. Take a look below.

Above you can see a photo of Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Both photos have been manipulated in Adobe Photoshop Elements to create different effects.

The Opera House photo shows an effect called "Plastic Wrap". It makes it look as if the subject is covered in clingfilm. The colours have also been changed in Photoshop to give it a more purple effect.

The Photo of the Bridge has been made to look futuristic using different filters in Photoshop.
